Our group is half way through the book and we are enjoying it so far. The theme of working class has come back into the book becasue Braddick had fallen on some hard time and stopped winning. The working class theme came back when it started to talk about how he went to work at the docks, which it talked about in the begining of the book but then dove into his sucsess as a boxer. It has been sort of a contrast between upper class and lower class by discussing his future opponent Max Baer. We so far are enoying the book and find it extreamly interesting. The book has really drawn us in but has died down a little becasue there is not the excitment of the auther decribing braddicks fights at this point in the book.

The reason I chose this book is because of many reasons. First off I chose this book because it covers something that if I could I would talk about it all day, sports. I have always found sports entertaining whether it is watch the Indians at home or going down to browns stadium I love sports. The other reason I chose the book is because it talks about the underdog. I always enjoy those types of stories, and always find myself cheering for the underdog. The style of the book has been very interesting and has really drawn me in by telling me from the beginning about his hard time he fell into and then diving into his success during the 20s. I think I will really enjoy the book and the style that it has been written in. So far I think that it is a good quality book and have enjoyed it so far. I especially like so far how the author has described his different fight at the beginning of the book.

The book over time has gone away from the theme of working class. A little reading ago the chapter focused on the fall and how Braddock thought he was jinxed but since then it talked about how his manager got him back on his feet and got him back into the ring. At the part where I started reading Braddock had just won another fight and now was going to contend Max Baer for the heavyweight championship. The theme of lower class is mention when it talks about how that drives him the night before the fight. In the last chapter it describes the fight between Braddock and Baer The author in my opinion gives a great description of the fight and is some of the best writing in the book. In the end due to a great move Braddock defeats Baer and with the money he wins in the fight gets out of poverty and moves into a large house with his family. The book over all I thought was a good read but not great littiture especially if you do not like sports. The different descriptions of boxers, their careers and the different fights they fought drew me in but I am not sure if people who are not as big as sports fan would enjoy it. Over all I liked and though that gave a fairly good description of fighting your way out of the lower class.

Something that I found very interesting is the several themes that the author covers apart from the working class. A main theme that I found very interesting that the author covers is the theme of Anti-Semitism. The man who Braddock fought in his famous fight Max Baer was a devote Jew. The author in a couple chapters covered the issue of Anti-Semitism in sports. He talked about the different challenges that Jewish athletes faced in all sports but especially in boxing. He really goes in depth of how Max Baer is affected by the Anti-Semitism in the chapter in the book the Star of David. The other theme that was covered very well was the theme that we are studying that of working class. The theme was really delved into and well covered. I thought that the book gave a great example of working class by showing how he was affected when he stopped winning, and is really affected by the depression. One example of this is t the fact that it show how much he to walk just to get to his two jobs. This showed how much pressure he fell under and how easy it is to loose everything that you have.

Here is our last group one: After finishing the book, we decided that it was a well written and satisfying book. None of us are big readers, but the book was compelling enough for us to read it. We thought it related well to the working class with Braddock having to make a hard earned living and then to fight figuratively nd literally to make a living. He was at the top and fell all the way to the bottom and then worked his way up inspirinng people to dream. He was not of the upper echeolon but worked to make it. If we can find ejoyment out of it, how bad can it be? We would recommend this book to anyone in a bad situation or anyone who likes to dream
