The book starts off with background information to familiarize the reader with the types of fighters the main characters are, what they eat, where they go, the gyms they work out in and the fighting history. So far the book has not really dragged any of us readers in but as we progress with each turn of the page the fire of intrest grows. In the book James J. Braddock wakes up every morning not knowing what he will do for a job, he walks four miles everyday in sometimes bad conditions to a dock where work is limited, hoping to get a job for the day. This moving of heavy equipment on the dock builds his strength and the four mile walks build his endurance. Hoping to get back into the ring after set backs took him out for what seemed like ages we will see if Braddock can get back into the ring to fight for survival.
What drew me to the book? The idea of boxing and sports drew my attention to the book and made me want to read it. I do not like reading at all for the most part and if i were to lose the path and get lost in a book, i figured it would most likely be this one, Cinderella Man. Sports was the main idea that enticed me. How is it working class? The setting for this book is during the Great Depression and Jim Braddock was a top notch boxer but then eventually lost it all. He then worked multiple jobs for example working on the docks. He has to work to make his way back to the top. Quality of writing? In my opinion, the book uses decent language. Very little use of intricate words provides for an easier read but at times, in my opinion, it can be long and drawn out and boring.
The quality of writing in this book isn't very intricate but right to the point. I enjoy the book because it is sports related and even though it doesn't have much effect on the book, the author works for espn. But anyways, reading through the pages, as I have previosly mentioned, i think some parts are long and drawn out and some parts do not have enough detail and depth. Going all the way back to his first fight vs. Corn Griffin, there is maybe 1-1.5 pages on it. Although i guess it would be hard to talk about a bout in extensive detail. An interesting style of writing in this book is the mention of other texts and such. Even though a novel and almost biography, Schaap makes use of quotes from other books. But all in all, this book in the middle pages has captured my interest unlike many other books in the past.
I love sports and inspirational stories, part of the reason I chose this book was these two reasons plus Chris is on the hockey team with me and we could discuss the book on bus trips. Unfortunately I am a slow reader but through the first few pages I kind of enjoy it. James J. Braddock is a has been boxer who’s career had gone down the drain along with Americas’ economy (being set in the great depression. So far the book is sowing Braddock’s life and how he has to walk 4 miles to work every morning for a job that does not guarantee work. At the docks he lifts heavy objects and a little foreshadowing occurs, the book says he becomes strong and endurant. I hope that Braddock can get back into the ring with his newly gained strength and win.
Midway through the book I am reporting again. So far it is a pretty good read. I enjoy the style of writing that Mr. Schaap uses really brings me in because in my opinion it is directed towards a sort of sports enthusiast direction. It is very fun to read about such an inspirational tale as the main character of the book Braddock has gotten back in the ring and is looking pretty good. This book is a good choice so far because the outcome is just what I expected and wanted out of this book. Hopefully in the second half of the book it exceeds expectations and really inspires me.
After finishing the book I am glad that I chose it! This inspirational tale ends in a bang as Braddock defeats the heavily favored Max Bear. Against 10 to 1 odds and with the entire weight of the working world’s dreams on his shoulders Braddock wins what is a great boxing match. Boxing was the most popular sport during this era and its world champion (now Braddock) was the most idolized figure in the nation and the world. This book gave me a sort of “Miracle” or “Rocky” film feel. It was a triumphant effort resulting in victory by the main character that you get to know throughout the book and in my personal opinion I wanted him to succeed very much. In the end I thought this book was a great read and would recommend it to any reader who is interested in inspirational stories or athletics.

Overall, the book has definitely met our expectations. We all four enjoyed how it was written about a sport but we do wish that the author, William Schaap, would have gone into greater detail about the fights themselves. We all thought that it was very interesting to see how people were surviving during the great depression, especially someone like Jim Braddock who had to work multiple jobs. Another great aspect of the book was being able to see how Jim, the main character, was able to climb his way back to the top of the boxing world. What made the book especially good to read was the fact that it was a true story. Ultimately, we would definitely recommend this novel to anyone searching for a great working class story.
what drew me to this book? well i think the fact that we had the chance to read a sports book was what intrigued me the most. I figured that it would keep me interested and it seemed to be a easy read. how is the book working class? well the book Cinderella Man is a ture story of a man trying to make a living off of boxing during the great depression. When he is unable to box has to go out into the city and find other jobs, mostly working laborous duities at the local habors. Quality of writting? I think that at the start of this book the quality of writting is not very high because Jeremy Schaap talks about all the facts of boxing and what was going on at the time. Hopefully the book will improve as time goes on.
The reason I chose to read Cinderella Man, written by William Schaap, was because it's written about a sport. Through the first few chapters I feel like the book still has yet to draw me in. So far Jim Braddock has been introduced as an ex boxer who had great potential but let it slip away. It appears that Braddock will be getting back into the ring soon because the author mentions that one of his few jobs, working on the docks, is helping him build strength. I hope that Braddock will give boxing another chance.
halfway through the book I feel like Jeremy Schaap is begining to meet my expectation. I think that I had very high expectations of the book, because so many people have told me that the movie was amazing, so i just assumed that the book would be the same. I like reading about the fine details of the fights and how badly Braddock and his opponents get injured. At points, it seems as though these men are not human. It is hard to think about the things that Braddock has to endure over the course of a boxing fight.
A little bit more than halfway through the book, I am really into it and can't seem to put it down. I am really starting to enjoy the writing style the Schaap uses. He introduces all of the aspects to boxing so well before he actually begins telling of the fight. I feel that this really appeals to those who are interested in sports. So far the book has definitely lived up to my expectations of being a great working class story. I really enjoy the detail that Schaap uses when discussing the hardships of living during the great depression. Although, the book is not as intellectual as I was expecting, the great plot and detail used makes up for it.
Now that I have finished the book I deffently enjoyed it. This book is a true underdog story. Braddock defeats the heavyweight champion Max Baer in just three rounds. I like the fact that you get to know the two men very well throughout the book. It gives a great angle to the story that most people never knew. James Braddock's ups and downs make this book an easy one to relate too. James's win takes place during the "Golden Age" of boxing in which after becoming the heavyweight cahmpion of the world he is looked up to by many. Throughout the book I would wonder if Braddock was ever going to get that second chance and after he does and is victorious it becomes a great feeling. I would defiantly recommend this book to all readers.
I personally chose to read Cinderella Man because it was about some kind of sport. Although boxing is not my favorite, I thought this book seemed much more interesting than the other choices. Thus far, I have yet to really get pulled into the story. It seems interesting and as if it may be building up more and more, but right now the book seems slightly boring. As several have mentioned, it is about Jim Braddock and as of yet he is still introduced as a past-time boxer. I think the book is about to take an interesting kick into action, but so far, I am not completely impressed. But I am confident that I will love this book. I love how the author writes. Somehow I feel somewhat of a connection.
Now that I'm about half way through the book, I have finally come around and found that this book is very interesting. It has surpassed my expectations. Being a sports finatic, I can really relate to Braddock now. The book is definitely connecting to my life a little now. I find that Schaap's description of the fights are quite excilerating. It gets me pumped up and that is exactly what strikes me in any book. I don't much enjoy reading, but Cinderella Man is about as close as it can get to me liking a book. It is fun and quick to read. This book is taking a turn to being great.
After having finished the book, I feel as if it has not only lived up to my expectations, but it has exceeded them. I knew that it was going to be good just from what I had heard from friends who had read it and from people who had seen the movie, but I enjoyed it a lot more than I was expecting. Although, I knew that the 10 to 1 underdog, Braddock, was going to win the final fight against Max Bear, I could never get tired of such an inspirational story. By winning, Braddock did so much much more than becoming the champion of the world, he brought hope to the entire working class during one of the worse times in the history of the U.S.
WOW! After finally finshing this story, I have come to really enjoy it. Jim Braddock's story is that of a true underdog. Not only does he express the brutality of boxing, but he gives an inside look at the two men in combat for the national title. This book is a great read and something that I definitely enjoyed. If I enjoyed reading a book, then it must be a pretty good book. I was constantly wondering if Braddock was actually going to come out on top and after he did I thought the story was excellent. This would be a good reading choice for anyone I think.
After reading this book, i discovered that there are books that interest me. It was not enough to make me want to go out and get another book today or tomrrow but maybe i will consider reading sometime. This was a good book but the only problem i had with it was, i knew what was going to happen. I have seen the movie and i figure why would they write this book if a zero almost got to hero status and then falls? That would be somewhat anticlimactic. Although a possibility i would've guessed even without knowing, Braddock would beat Baer. I found this to be a good book though mosty because the sports aspect drove me to like it. The writing did not really grab my interest but the story did and i am sure that is what a good book will do to you. Great story of a true underdog and really gives people with dreams the chance to(dream). The target i would guess would be anyone especially sports lovers and i would guess people with not too hard of a voacbulary because the word choices as i have stated fbefore are not all too intricate but appropriate for someone of my reading level. It conveys a good message and it is a good story making the book good.
The book originally started off really slowly because everything was about the two main fighter's history. The two main fighters in the book are James J. Braddock and Max Baer. I wont lie, the book was sort of boring in the beginning and I didn’t really like how far into the book it picked up, if I wasn’t told to read the book i probably would have put it down and stopped reading it. I like how when the boxers are fighting the author goes really deep into explaining each and every round, I felt like I was there, experiencing the fight. This really drew me in because it showed the boxers weak points as well as their strong ones. I like the fact that the book is about an Irish American who is trying really hard to make a living for his family during really hard times.
first of all i would just like to say everyone is doing a fantastic job. On another note this is Claire Ciotti Harry and Rocs blog...Billy Logan and Moses are not in this group. Chris Ciotti, i enjoy reading your posts. It is quite anstonishing to see why you have chosen this book. Did you enjoy the book? Have you had an easy time reading this book? I also chose this book because i love sports, do you think this aspect make the book fly by?
I really started to get into the book in the ninth chapter. It starts to pick up with James J. Braddock and tell us about how he signs up for relief from the government in order to provide food and shelter for his family. He starts to work at these docks which he walks 3 miles to every morning and evening. Turns out, lifting and moving things around the docks puts him in the best physical condition he has ever been in. He returns to and ends up in the heavyweight tournament, eventually boxing against Baer for the actual heavyweight. I like this because it shows the struggle of Braddock and how talent doesn’t come naturally to athletes, they really have to practice to be the best that they can be. He goes on government relief and when the secret is accidentally revealed by someone in the paper, while secretly ashamed, he brushes the embarrassment off and makes the best of the situation. Braddock works hard his whole life to try and provide for his loved ones and pays everyone back who lends him money. I really respect how genuine of a person he is and how he has such determination in every situation.
I picked this book because I really enjoy athletics and considering how I had already read the Glass Castle, I decided this was my next top choice. I like it because in a way many can relate to it. The first reason being that I like sports, and this book is about sports. The second reason being that I am Irish and the main character James J. Braddock is Irish as well. I also like how the story revolves around the great depression and many of our grandparents lived during this time period so I thought that it would be interesting to see another story from that time other than the ones you hear all the time. Another factor that leads into this was how we have been learning a lot about the Nazis and the holocaust in history and religion and history of Max Baer being Jewish sort of ties into the story. I expected the story to be a good one, and I was right. While it was kind of hard to find time to read but once I started reading I couldn’t put the book down because I was so into the story. Overall I think that this was a really good book for anyone who wants to read a story about an athlete’s life, someone during the depression, or a biography or just for a fun read.
It is really intresting to see why everyone chose this book. We all chose this book because it is about sports. All of our responses are strikingly similar to eachother when it comes to ow we felt about the book after we had all finished it. It truly was inspiring as Braddock is on top of the bxing world and i think we all felt that twinge in our hearts as Braddock celebrtes his well deserved victory.
harry i found the book to be really good as well, and i yes i do think that the fact it revolves around a sport story did attribute to how fast the book flew by. It was easy to read the book and get involved, however i got lost when other boxers' name were brought into the story.
To add on to the last blog, whether you were in Billys Group or Our group the responses and reasons why we chose the book are highly similar and this connection really shows the comprable personalities that these two groups of scholarly readers share.
To make it more jucier, this story really dragged us into the deeper meaning of life. As an underdog story this group really tied in the great depression and the working class in a truly inspiratonal tail. With the fiery passions of the working class behind each punch Braddock defeats bear in what is really a heart wrenching victory. The working class represented by the famous hands of Braddock win not only a victory on paper but also a moral victory as well. This victory gave the working class hope in a time where such success was very rare to find. The working class and all those suffering from the affects of the Great Depression were lifted up along with the arm of Braddock...signaling his victory. I can honestly say that both of these groups are tied together with these people, the feelings they felt, the things they thought, the smiles on there faces occured in both eras, whether it be reading about the fight or seeing it in real life.
